Tirana, October 23 (Albania Journal) – Tirana is set to host Albania’s first underground electrical substation, featuring an installed capacity of 200 MVA and three underground levels. According to the project, the facility will also be the first of its kind in the Balkan region.
Mentor Hima, administrator of OSHEE Group, recently signed the implementation contract for the construction of the new Qendër Substation. The project is being financed through a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The contract was signed with a representative of Croatian company Dalekovod, paving the way for a strategic investment aimed at modernising the electricity infrastructure in Albania’s capital.
The signing completes the arrangements under the loan agreement, which was signed on March 27, 2026, and became effective on September 25, 2026.
The contract is valued at approximately €20 million, with construction scheduled to be completed within 22 months of the start of work. More than 40,000 electricity customers supplied by the new Qendër Substation are expected to benefit from the investment.
The substation will feature four transformers, each with a capacity of 50 MVA, three 110 kV cable lines and 24 outgoing 20 kV feeders.
The project aims to modernise the electricity infrastructure, increase the capacity of the power distribution system and improve the safety and quality of electricity supply. It is also expected to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the network.
Additionally, the investment is expected to help reduce technical losses and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, supporting the development of a more modern and sustainable energy infrastructure.
Through the project, OSHEE Group Sh.A. aims to better meet Tirana’s growing electricity demand, strengthen the resilience of the distribution network and create more favourable conditions for the area’s economic and social development.
