Tirana, October 31 (Albania Journal) – The first four planned surgical procedures have been successfully performed at Mirdita Municipal Hospital in collaboration with the University Hospital of Trauma, marking a step towards decentralising healthcare services in Albania.
The development was announced by Minister of Health and Social Welfare Klodiana Spahiu, who said the initiative would bring specialised medical treatment closer to citizens and reduce pressure on university hospitals in Tirana.
“This is a concrete step in implementing the policies of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to decentralise healthcare, bringing specialised treatment closer to citizens and reducing the flow towards university hospitals in Tirana,” Spahiu said.
According to the minister, the hospital mentorship model strengthens the capabilities of regional and municipal hospitals by making the expertise of specialised medical teams available to meet local healthcare needs.
“A more balanced healthcare system means stronger local hospitals, easier access for citizens and a lower burden on hospital centres in Tirana,” Spahiu said.
The completion of the first four surgical procedures in Mirdita is part of broader efforts to expand healthcare services across the country and give municipal and regional hospitals a greater role in providing medical care.
The initiative also aims to reduce the number of patients travelling to university hospitals in Tirana, easing pressure on major medical centres while improving access to treatment for people in local communities.
Strengthening local hospitals and promoting cooperation with university medical centres are key elements of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare’s strategy to decentralise healthcare services and improve medical care throughout Albania.
